Had to pry myself away from that unbelievable Wimbledon final yesterday in order to bring you this, so please feel special. Here’s a colourful summer tune that you can blast while chilling out and drinking Corona (my favorite).
I Just Wanna Be – Born Blonde
15 MayNot often is it that I get to say “I’m good friends with the person in that band.” Sadly, this is not one of those times. The closest I’ve gotten is befriending Born Blonde’s lead singer’s sister, who may herself have a music career in the cards. I know, some families just get all the talent while others make websites talking about how incredible they are. It’s just the way the world works.
Fall for Your Type (feat. Drake) – Jamie Foxx
4 MayYou see it has Drake in the title and you know it’s me. I just love him. There I said it. While rappers like Rick Ross come out with audacious and impractical declarations such as “I’ve got a chopper in the car,” I prefer Drake’s more heartfelt verses about his actual life experiences. Combine that with Jamie Foxx’s beautiful floating voice and you have something special.
Carmen – Lana Del Rey
3 FebHo, ho, ho! Welcome to my third and final installment in Lana Del Rey: Backlash The Third! Here’s my review of Summertime Sadness and Dark Paradise. It’s worth noting that if these reviews have convinced you to buy the album (and apparently, many of you have in the U.K) that the Deluxe Edition is a neat extra. Included are Lolita, Without You and Lucky Ones; all pleasant extras. After the jump, there’s a review of Carmen and the track itself. If that’s not a great enough incentive, well, it’s Friday. What else do you have to do?
10 Things I Love About Pop
7 JanWelcome to 10 Things I Love About Pop: 2012! Or, 10 Things I Loved About Pop In The Year The World Was Supposed To End. Whatever works for you. Let’s have some good news anyway, shall we? Michael and Jonah have both returned to the blog: Good for fans of Drake and indie bands respectively (more news from them later) and great news for Henry’s energy levels. There’s only so many unreleased Katy Perry demos one can write about. So let’s head into another year of pop music, head’s high and smiling. It’s as glossy and slightly disconcerting as ever and we’re going to have a lot of fun analyzing it. Enjoy:
We Are Young – fun. ft. Janelle Monae
3 JanHey! Welcome to 2012. I have a feeling this year’s going to be really good. I also have a feeling that I say that every year but it’s never bad to start with a bit of optimism. One reason to make you feel gleeful: We Are Young has been given an official video. A few more reasons: There’s plenty of slow-motion shots, Janelle Monae being Janelle Monae and a giant beanie Dog being ripped apart. Hey, whatever floats your boat. It’s an awesome start to the musical year and I hope fun. find mainstream success. The video’s below, and Glee’s version is after the jump. It’s really worth watching. Happy New Year!
The Year In: Chart Toppers
30 DecAh, pop music. I hope 2011 was as good for you as it was for me. We’ve had hits from Rihanna (somehow managing to string singles from Loud while releasing new material from Talk That Talk), a few hits from KP and one massive Party Rock Anthem from LMFAO. As per, DJ Earworm has releaseed his end-of-year remix, featuring some of the year’s 25 biggest tracks. It may be a fairly cheap way to garner attention by joyriding on others’ commercial success but it’s a helpful way to view the year that was. We’ve decided to highlight some of our favourites from the remix:
First things first, the remix:
Lucy – Jealousy
1 DecLet me take you back a few years. There is little to no information available on the supposed greatest source of information in the world about this track and/or this band. I think it’s reasonable to guess that the guy in the album art is staring longingly at Lucy. Continue reading
10 Things I Love About Pop: Week 6
19 Nov
Talking That Talk (in black and white): It’s been a moody time in pop. Not really, but I couldn’t find colour photos.
Last week was pretty dramatic for me, and pop music. And the WORLD. So let’s take a more peaceful gander through the world of pop music this week. No apocalyptic visions, just ear-friendly beats. It was a Rihanna-centric week which is good news for anyone who’s a fan of the Good Girl Gone Debauched, bad for anyone who still has Umber-ella-ella-ella ringing through their brain. This is also a video-heavy post, because a) there seemed to be rather a lot this week and b) I’m tired. Let’s pop!
Golden Blood – Friends Electric
16 NovI’ve been meaning to post about this one for a while. Friends Electric have really impressed me lately, and this number in particular has really grabbed my attention as well as a place on the iPod playlist to end all iPod playlists: my “Journey to School” playlist. You can rest easy when you’ve made it into that one.
