The Can You Hear This Countdown: Single of the Year

19 Dec

At Christmas we get two of the greatest things in life: End-of-year lists and snowglobes. Now, we wanted to focus on one of these things and thought it would probably be easiest to feature the former. Behold, the first of the Can You Hear This Countdown (catchy, I know). We’ve compiled a list of our favourite singles, albums and artists of the year for our readers’ pleasure. First up, which singles we loved this year. Check back this week for the next two additions. Disclaimer: no end-of-year list is definitive. That is to say, none of us at Can You Hear This has listened to every single second of music that has been released via a record label, YouTube or Myspace. These are our personal choices, chosen from what we actually have listened to, that we feel will define 2011 for us. And even then, I use ‘define’ briefly. Happy Birthday To Us: Our Favourite Songs Of The Year

2 Aug

Birthday Wishes: It’s been an action packed year for us and the music world.

As you will now know, Can You Hear This is now a year old; congratulations once more to Devan Carlton for winning our competition and choosing a great album as a prize. Nowadays a year in music is a long time, different reviews, news and music-related scandals becoming a daily occurrence thanks to the Internet. I’m not complaining because as a music blog we contribute to this, but sometimes it’s good to take a step back and look at the music and events that have really made a different to the industry, and more importantly to ourselves. It’s been a year of exciting collaborations with Jay-Z and Kanye exciting us with news of their own royal wedding. It’s been fantastic year once more for up and coming artists from Britain and internationally. We chose to vest our pop music interests in Jessie J, while more alternative acts (Two Door Cinema Club, The xx) have also flourished. Recently, we’ve been saddened by the loss of a fantastic female artist, Amy Winehouse whose loss will be felt for years to come. Having created such stirring singles such as Love Is A Losing Game, Back To Black and Rehab, that rare example of a candid, open pop song that achieves massive commercial success, Winehouse was truly inspiring. I hope her wonderful female presence continues to influence new artists and live on.

Ghosts – B I G S L E E P

21 Jan

Drive Like I Do are back, now, as promised, as B I G S L E E P. That makes them the second of four bands to come back from a quiet 2010 and its only January! Big Sleep, as they are now known as, are born right out of the now deceased project Drive Like I Do. And former fans of DLID, of which there are many, will instantly be pleased to see that what made them so good to listen to the first time remains. But from the first single, there’s going to be a whole lot more.
