My Body – Young The Giant

Young The Giant: Look! They are so summery you guys.

Sometimes, something bizarro happens and a band just completely bypasses me. Such was the case with Young The Giant. Fear not, I shall be atoning for my sins this week:

Glee: And apologies (not always hand-in-hand)

Man, I know most of my posts lately read like one long apology but once more unto the breach, dear friends. Once more: I apologise. I’ve been in the country all week without a laptop/internet, spending my time learning to drive/riding horses which has left me a fairly competent driver and emotionally crippled after watching War Horse. Anyway, one of my failures this week was to not catch everyone up with a Gleecap. I’m smacking my hands for you guys, don’t worry. As Glee (in the U.S) has one more episode and is then taking (another!) hiatus, I thought I’d round up all of this year’s five episodes so we’re all fresh for its return. In the mean time, new Glee music. Here’s the original, Gleeview after the jump:

Cough Syrup – Young The Giant

15 Jul

While today may be a huge day in the world of film (the climax of the most popular British wizard is hitting theatres), the music world continues on. Having only just returned from the USA today, I wanted to bring back something other than jet lag and Young The Giant is just that. The Californian quintet could simply be dismissed as an above average rock band with a familiar sound and fine facial hair. Thankfully that’s not the case! The band’s catchy and strident breed of rock music put them into the US limelight rapidly following the digital release of their self-titled album a few months back. Now they are setting about conquering the UK, playing both Reading and Leeds and releasing their album physically at the end of August.

The album never wavers in quality but as always there are choice tracks. Although this post isn’t really about it, My Body, the first single, is just too good not to mention – the anthemic chorus won’t stop circling your head!

A large part of what makes Young The Giant stand so far beyond other artists in the same genre is Sameer Gadhia’s vocals which are beautifully highlighted in the band’s upcoming second single, Cough Syrup. It’s more somber than My Body both musically and lyrically (“Life’s too short to even care at all“). But it’s under-stated and makes for a passionate song about being lovesick. Along with the second single they’ve also put out a funky video which goes perfectly with the song although it’s hard to say why!

In short, Young the Giant have got charisma and real talent and expect what made them such a hit in the US to blow them up on the other side of the pond.
