Channel Orange – Frank Ocean

11 Jul

So many things running through my head right now. Yes, I just did a post about Frank when I myself champion variety. Yes, Channel Orange was scheduled for a later release, and yes, I have to learn many pointless things for my British Citizenship test (including that Welsh is most widely spoken in Wales. Who would have thought?). But just please….

Tongue Tied (Live) – Grouplove

10 Jul

Love.

We have a serious love of Grouplove at the blog and it’s not surprising that they crop up so regularly in summer months. Their album is tailor made for scorching summer days with your mates, cruising across America or chilling on a beach. They speak to teendom (slumber parties, getting high) and the allure of summer (check out their video for ‘Spun’). Here’s a live session of my favourite of their songs, Tongue Tied. It’s perfect and amazing to see just how much fun they’re having:

Sweet Life – Frank Ocean

7 Jul

World, let it be known that I love Frank Ocean. The singer has been in the limelight recently after a post on his Tumblr that appeared to tell of a summertime romance with another guy caused the world to label him as gay or bisexual. Fear not, Frank. In the words of Celine Dion, I will always love youuuuuuuuu…

Pony – Ginuwine

26 Apr

It’s my birthday today!! That’s right, I am finally allowed to drink and go clubbing legally. It is somewhat ironic/annoying that when I go to college in Chicago next year both of these things will immediately become illegal again until I reach the ripe old age of 21. If you know this song, you might think it’s an inappropriate one to  feature on my birthday. In fact, you might think it’s inappropriate to feature at all. Continue reading

Tuesday Heartbreak – Stevie Wonder

24 Apr

It's a wonder he's still . . . : You fill that out for yourself.

Look, yesterday’s track was supposed to be for Tuesday and the caption for the photo would actually have made sense. Yuck. Here’s some Stevie Wonder for forgiveness.

Whistle – Flo Rida

18 Apr

Whistle Up: It's Flo-Flo back for mo-mo. Sorry.

Well, we needed something to play on the radio this summer. Hey, this fills a gap pretty well. I prefer Good Feeling, or whatever words he cut out of the last song he sampled but this is pretty catchy. Having a hook as a whistle makes things difficult when you’re drunk in a club I imagine (emphasis on ‘imagine’) and the entendre isn’t so much double as single. If that, it’s like a half-entendre with a limp. Take a listen after the jump:

Take Care (Drake Medley) – Joseph SoMo

12 Mar

For those of you who have read my posts for a while, you’ll know that I thought Drake absolutely killed it with his latest album Take Care. I went through a love affair with each song separately and for the first time really realised the genius of Drake’s lyrics. For any fans of that album, this post is an absolute must-read. You will fall in love with what you’re about to hear.  Continue reading

1 Thing I Love About Pop

21 Jan

This is a rather sad column today. Firstly, I have flu so looking at this laptop screen is about the 177th I would like to be doing right now. Secondly, the great blues singer Etta James passed away yesterday. She died from complications from leukemia at the age of 73. There aren’t many ways to say ‘I’m really upset about this,’ and sometimes simplicity is key. Thus: I’m really upset about this. James was a singer whose voice was at once instantly recognisable and identifiable as well as completely unique. It’s funny (if I can use that word) that two major pop songs right now (Avicii’s Levels and Flo Rida’s Good Feeling) both sample James’s ‘Something’s Got a Hold on Me’. If that introduces a whole new generation to James’ magic, then the world’s all the best for it. More gushing after the jump:

The Knowing (Video) – The Weeknd

27 Nov

Following on from the success of House of Balloons (see Jonah’s previous post here), The Weeknd has just released his first music video, a cinematic 7-minute short for his closing track on that mixtape, The Knowing:

We Found Love (feat. Calvin Harris) – Rihanna

31 Oct

Okay forgive me for being late on this one. About a month late, but we’ll just say that this is post that is celebrating the video. It was weird. The other night I heard a Rihanna song. I liked it, so I decided to listen to some more Rihanna songs. It was a very simple development that took place over the course of that one night, and now I really really like Rihanna. Her newest offering, We Found Love features Calvin Harris and is absolutely sure to getcha groovin.

Also, if you like this song, then you should really check out Coldplay’s cover. I think it’s done really well and Chris Martin sounds good with anything:
