What We’re Listening To: Edition 6

Clockwise from Left to Right: Johnny Foreigner want to see in 3D, Fountains of Wayne stand in red and Anberlin look suitably somber

Hello once again audience (Tobuscus reference anyone?) and welcome to edition 6. Bizarrely and totally coincidentally, it’s about all things youthful – maybe we’re just growing up.

Michael: Johnny Foreigner – (Don’t) Show Us Your Fangs

In the wake of the release of Johnny Foreigner’s Vs. Everything, I thought today was the time to take the look at some music off the record. Johnny Foreigner have the remarkable ability to capture raw youthfulness and make anyone feel like a teenager (that said, I technically am one so…). While NME gave the latest effort a 3/10, the community have given it a 9.4 – shows how much journalists know right!? Don’t Show Us Your Fangs is effortlessly catchy and 100% free – enough to make anyone dance like a youngster.

Henry: Fountains Of Wayne – Prom Theme

Fountains of Wayne are one of my favourite bands. Best known to me for each of their sensitive, constantly evolving albums. Best known to you for a song about some girl called Stacy’s mum (okay, mom). Anyway, their first album, Utopia Parkway is well worth checking out if you’re interested in youthful disaffection. And really who isn’t? Prom Theme perfectly encapsulates the feeling that it’s all down hill after secondary school (okay, high school). It’s worth mentioning that as the only adult on the blog, I find this incredibly depressing. Michael and Jonah just wouldn’t relate. Kids these days.

Jonah: Anberlin – I’d Like To Die

I thought Anberlin were all heavy metal. I have one Anberlin song on my iPod that I tend to avoid because I’m worried that the volume will be too loud, and I will inadvertently burst both of my eardrums with a deafening electric guitar riff. Now I have two Anberlin songs on my iPod, and this one, entitled I’d Like To Die, is an extraordinarily thoughtful (if a little depressing) number. I’d advise listening to this bad boy on rainy days, when your girlfriend or boyfriend is pissing you off, or just all the time if you enjoy feeling emotionally charged.

A somber week this week so feel free to let your opinions be known in the comments below!

Agreed- Utopia Parkway is an amazing album. I actually really love the progression through all of their music- The Guardian had an interview with them on Friday which was pretty neat
