Here Lies Love – Fatboy Slim & David Byrne (feat. Florence Welch)

10 Oct

The combination of Talking Heads‘ David Byrne and DJ Fatboy Slim was never going to have resulted in an ordinary album. And as if there was any doubt Here Lies Love, an album that chronicles the history of the Phillipine’s first lady Imelda Romuáldez Marcos, resulted in something less Katy Perry and more, well cracked out. The album that features guests such as Cyndi Lauper, Tori Amos and Martha Wainwright is at times fantastic, at times frustrating. Indeed sometimes the album feels just too conceptual as Byrne and Fatboy Slim cautiously explore their pairing and Marcos’ political life. However, Here Lies Love provides some gems (the album contains a sizeable 15 tracks). In particular the eponymous track and Every Drop of Rain that features Candie Payne and St. Vincent.

Of 2010, a combination of Dj Fatboy Slim, Talking Head’s David Byrne and Florence without Machine might be one of the more unique arrangements. Yet, their talents seem to blend together to form a wonderfully uplifting and emotive song. There was a possibility of Florence exhaustion this summer, the redhead could be found wailing at most festivals but this song showcases her voice and reminds us why we fell for her in 2008. Whereas her voice sometimes has a tendency to sound overdramatic and at times even squeaky, it fits this track beautifully. The pitchy vocals heard on her cover of You Got the Love (you know ‘You got Overplayed’ when the song plays at the ASDA checkout, Flo) fit the feel of Here Lies Love and are kept in control by an upbeat beat that feels wonderfully refreshing. A different and more exciting combination of musical talents to play when the Top 40’s equally banal pairings of Ironik and Jessica Lowndes, Eminem and Rihanna, and Ke$ha and whoever will take her start to blend into one.
